Cell Adhesion: Sorting out Cell Mixing with Echinoid?

Cadherins control intercellular adhesion in epithelial cells. This property relies on the ability to recruit actin filaments at adherens junctions via beta-catenin and alpha-catenin. A recent study shows that Echinoid, a member of the immunoglobulin domain containing protein family, is a modulator of intercellular adhesion in Drosophila that controls cell sorting.

Differential adhesion and actomyosin cable collaborate to drive Echinoid-mediated cell sorting.

Cell sorting involves the segregation of two cell populations into `immiscible' adjacent tissues with smooth borders. Echinoid (Ed), a nectin ortholog, is an adherens junction protein in Drosophila, and cells mutant for ed sort out from the surrounding wild-type cells. However, it remains unknown which factors trigger cell sorting. Here, we dissect the sequence of this process and find that cel...

The cell adhesion molecules Echinoid and Friend of Echinoid coordinate cell adhesion and cell signaling to regulate the fidelity of ommatidial rotation in the Drosophila eye.

Directed cellular movements are a universal feature of morphogenesis in multicellular organisms. Differential adhesion between the stationary and motile cells promotes these cellular movements to effect spatial patterning of cells. A prominent feature of Drosophila eye development is the 90 degrees rotational movement of the multicellular ommatidial precursors within a matrix of stationary cell...

Cadherins in development: cell adhesion, sorting, and tissue morphogenesis.

Tissue morphogenesis during development is dependent on activities of the cadherin family of cell-cell adhesion proteins that includes classical cadherins, protocadherins, and atypical cadherins (Fat, Dachsous, and Flamingo). The extracellular domain of cadherins contains characteristic repeats that regulate homophilic and heterophilic interactions during adhesion and cell sorting. Although cad...

Computer Simulations of Cell Sorting Due to Differential Adhesion

The actions of cell adhesion molecules, in particular, cadherins during embryonic development and morphogenesis more generally, regulate many aspects of cellular interactions, regulation and signaling. Often, a gradient of cadherin expression levels drives collective and relative cell motions generating macroscopic cell sorting. Computer simulations of cell sorting have focused on the interacti...
